Lecture series to look at Washington state wines effect on jobs and the economy

Washington State University at Vancouver will host Thomas Henick-Kling, director of Viticulture & Enology at WSU Tri-Cities, as their featured speaker for the next Chancellor's series lunch.

Henick-Kling will present “The Promise of Washington Wines” on Friday, October 10 from 11:45 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.. The event will be held on the Vancouver campus located at 14204 NE Salmon Creek Ave., Vancouver, in the Firstenberg Student Commons.

Henick-Kling will speak on WSU’s industry-leading wine and viticulture program and the university's role in Washington state’s burgeoning wine industry. He will demonstrate how the wine industry is creating jobs and powering the state's economy, and offer resources for Southwest Washington vintners including how to promote Washington wines.

Local vintner Walt Houser, owner of Bethany Vineyard and Winery, and Mill Creek Pub owner Russell Brent, will offer a local perspective of Washington State wines.

Thomas Henick-Kling has been honored nationally and internationally for his work. In 1994 the New York Wine & Grape Foundation awarded him its Wine Industry Research Award. In 2002 the International Association of Enology, Winery Management and Wine Marketing made him an honorary lifetime member.

Henick-Kling earned his PhD at the Australian Wine Research Institute at the University of Adelaide, Australia. He earned his masters in microbiology and food science at Oregon State University.
